Olof will speak on the topic Mining triggers sustainable development on Wednesday June 13 in the Key Note Address Session Sustainability in Action
In several low- and middle-income countries with important extractive sectors, mining make significant contributions to national economic and social development. Mineral rich countries also develop faster than countries with few known mineral resources. This shows a new study within the framework of the United Nations University (UNU) World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER) initiative Exctractives for Development. The results are contrary to the image that many researchers, politicians and the public have of the mining industry, as a curse rather than a blessing.
